What are you favourite flavour of sweet?
Which sweets do you choose first from a selection?
Which ones don’t you like but will eat when all the other ones have gone?
Do you ever try one and realise it’s nicer than you thought? Or the opposite, you try one you think you’ll like and it’s awful?!
These are like our feelings…some we enjoy experiencing and would choose for ourselves (happiness, joy, pride etc) and others we would not invite (sadness, fear, guilt, shame etc).
The intensity of our feelings or emotional visitors can change too. Some are obvious and strong and others more subtle and in the background somewhere as a faint swirl, beat or shiver.
Using sweet flavours is a superb way of sharing, expressing and communicating about the emotional visitors we experience. Children, teachers and parents need a variety of ways to discuss this.
The PSHE statements for mental health in KS2 state children should be able to:
- recognise that feelings can change over time and range in intensity
- use a varied vocabulary when talking about feelings; and how to express feelings in different ways:
- strategies to respond to feelings, including intense or conflicting feelings; how to manage and respond to feelings appropriately and proportionately in different situations
Awareness of our feelings is the start of choosing how we respond to them.
As parents it’s so important that we notice our own feelings so we have capacity to cope with those of our children and family.
